Name: Nicolette Loxton
Details: Born in Bulawayo and educated in Zimbabwe, Nicolette Loxton was trained in the Cecchetti method from the early age of 4, under the late Heather and Norma Macdonald and, her mother, Fay Loxton, who holds Fellowship status in the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, Cecchetti Society Faculty. As a young child she also studied Tap, Modern and Highland dancing. At the age of 16, Ms Loxton won the Bulawayo Ballet Society Bursary, adjudicated by the late David Poole, and chose to further her studies at the UCT Ballet School (now UCT School of Dance). After 3 years she graduated with distinctions and was accepted into the CAPAB Ballet Company in 1979 (now Cape Town City Ballet). She was a Principal Dancer for CAPAB for 16 years. Noted for her wonderful musicality, strong classical technique and portrayal of both comedy and tragedy, she won the Balletomanes award in 1983 and 1985. In 1986 she was acknowledged for her portrayal of "Olympia" from Tales of Hoffmann, winning a special Nederburg award. Her portrayal of "Carmen" won her the 1987 Nederburg award. Her last performance was in 1994. Ms Loxton was Ballet Mistress for the CAPAB Ballet Company from June 1994 to June 1995, after which she resumed her Cecchetti studies, attaining Associate Status, the Maestro Enrico Cecchetti Diploma in 197 and the Associate Diploma in 2001. Ms Loxton presently runs her own Balet studio in Cape Town and has conducted numerous award and Bursary classes for the RAD Society. She guest teaches for Cape Town City Ballet and teaches for Cape Dance Academy. She joined the Cape Junior Ballet Company as a teacher and choreographer in January 2005.
