Name: Robin van Wyk
Details: Robin van Wyk was born in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa and received his tertiary ballet training from Brenda Maclachlan and then from Dudley Thomlinson at the University of Cape Town School of Dance. He joined NAPAC Dance Company in 1990, moving on to PACT Ballet in 1991. He joined Cape Town City Ballet in 1997, where he is presently a Principal Dancer. Roles that he has danced include Romeo in Romeo and Juliet, Franz in Coppelia, Freddie Mercury in Queen, the Prince in the Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty and Escamilio in Carmen. Robin has also been a part of the international touring cast of the musical CATS.
Apart from being an outstanding versatile artist, receiving awards from Nederburg, FNB and Dalro, he is also the recipient of Cape Town's FNB Vita's award for the most promising choroegrapher. In 1999 he choreographed his first one act ballet, Geisha, for Cape Town City Ballet, followed by the full length Robin Hood in 2005, Beauty and the Beast in 2006, James Bond in 2007 and the Ugly Duckling in 2008, all of which were staged in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. Robin produced and co-choreographed the ballet Nomvula-After The Rain in 2007. In March 2008 he was appointed Artistic Director to the Cape Town City Ballet and he also teaches and choreographs for the Cape Junior Ballet Company.
